Trail Description
Saddle up for six miles of high-desert scenery, sandstone formations, window rocks, wide-open views, and a little piece of Southwestern history. The Canyons Wyld Loop is a fun, beginner-friendly ride designed for guests who want to experience the landscape without taking on our more advanced terrain. Along the way, you'll ride high enough to look across the river toward Largo Canyon, wind through natural rock formations, and encounter portions of our trail system that intersect with the historic Old Spanish Trail. Long before modern roads crossed the Southwest, networks of Indigenous trails connected communities across this country. Spanish explorers later traveled portions of these routes, and by the 1800s they had become part of an extraordinary trade network linking New Mexico with California. Beginning in 1829, commercial caravans carried goods between New Mexico and Los Angeles. Woolen blankets and other New Mexican goods traveled west by pack mule, while valuable horses and mules made the long journey back east. Traders crossed mountains, rivers, canyons, and some of the driest country in North America. Today, you'll experience a small piece of that landscape from horseback. As you ride, imagine traveling this country without roads, trailers, weather forecasts, or GPS. Water mattered. Good grazing mattered. Knowing the land could mean the difference between completing the journey and turning back. And keep your eyes open. Historic trails can still hold traces of the people who traveled them. If you encounter an artifact or something that appears historic, enjoy the discovery, take a photograph, and leave it exactly where you found it. Its location is part of its story. The Canyons Wyld Loop combines an approachable horseback ride with unusual geology, sweeping views, and the chance to experience history the way travelers once did: from the back of a horse.
